Amesbury is
a small, diverse New England town, tucked into the hills and fields along the
Powow and Merrimack Rivers on the seacoast north of Boston.
Soon after Amesbury was settled in 1642, the rushing waters of the Powow River
were harnessed for mills, and the modest farming community began its ascent
into American industrial history. Amesbury, it is believed, was the site of
the first American factory to produce machine-made nails. Ship building, followed
in the 19th century by textile mills, dominated the settlement's early industry.
From 1853 until well into the 1900s, Amesbury carriages, known around the world
for their workmanship and style, were the economic heartbeat of the town. The
Merrimack Hat Factory at its peak produced more head gear than any of its competitors.
And the nation's number one candy was, for a while, Hoyt's Buffalo Brand Peanut
Butter Kisses, produced ... in Amesbury.
As a newcomer to the area, you'll discover qualities which the natives have
long taken to - the fine natural setting, and access to the outdoors - hiking,
skiing, boating and swimming are all available. Lake Attitash forms part of
thc town's northwestern border and covers over 400 acres. It is the second
largest body of water in Essex county.
Shipbuilding, textiles & carriages
Lake Gardner was formed by building a dam across the Powow River. Large quantities
of ice used to be cut on this lake in winter to supply the town during the
year, but these days Lake Gardner is best known for its town beach and swimming
area, as well as its lovely vistas.
A neighborly,
informal atmosphere; the comfortable bustle of the downtown's Market Square
and Millyard Park; strong schools, excellent health-care facilities, an unusually
well-stocked public library and a supportive environment for the arts make
Amesbury special.
Perhaps even more
than this we think you'll enjoy Amesbury's access to New England's major
cities and highways, as well as a housing market that covers the spectrum
from affordable to luxurious.
OPPORTUNITY AND GROWTH
If business is your pleasure, vou'll be pleased to see history still alive in
Amesbury. Skilled craftsmen, some of them descended from Amesbury's prestigious
ship- and carriage-building tradesmen, bring pride to their work in sophisticated
high-tech, defense, and fabricated-products companies.
The "Golden Triangle," an office area bounded by Interstates 95 and 495 and
Route 110, offers an excellent location & opportunity for growth. The Hunt
Road Industrial Area, nearly 400 acres of industrially-zoned land, still has
plenty of room for planned growth.
