Historic West Newbury
Settled in 1642
West Newbury, a picturesque New England town bordering the Merrimack River is a quiet residential village now but at the time of its separation from Newbury in 1819, it was a bustling industrial center manufacturing boots and shoes, carriages and chaises and the first combs industry made in America. In 1770, Enoch Noyes started the first comb industry and from that grew several comb shops and the invention of much of the machinery.
Entering the town from the East, one crosses the Artichoke River and begins a very pleasant journey along the Main Street of West Newbury.
The first point of interest is All Saints Church built in 1912. The construction is similar to St. Nicholas' Church in England . Many of the carvings were executed by Kirschmayer of Oberammergau , Germany.
The property across
the street, now owned by Richard Chase, was formerly the home of J. Appleton
Brown, an artist of note. A short distance above the Chase house a marker shows
the birthplace of renowned Greek Scholar Cornelius Conway Felton, born in 1807,
and in 1860 was inaugurated as president of Harvard College.
Continuing
westward to "Way to the River" is the First Parish Community
Church whose parish dates back to 1686. It is said to have
a Paul Revere bell.
